Artist Statement

Art is an articulation of my personal philosophy about the nature of reality and our experience within the world, whether real or imagined.

Many of my works are derived from philosophical questions, such as Martin Heidegger’s writing on ‘What is a thing?” and “Thingness”. Although the questions that generate my art are deep, I prefer to create work that has a playful and whimsical appearance. I make art that is accessible and arouses the curiousity and imagination of  the viewer.

The focus of my arts practice is to examine the relationship between humans and objects: how we perceive, relate to, and imagine the objects of our everyday experiences. I consider  that objects can capture the imagination of a person, and for a moment provide a space for the creation of daydreams, reminiscence and fantasy. Therefore, the intention of my art is to open up a world that the audience is invited to explore, but also, to give people a  strange and new perspective of familiar things.

My approach to art making is interdisciplinary. I like to experiment with ceramics, painting, drawing, book binding and found objects. I am not a purist and prefer to find the material that best articulates the concept.

At present I am exploring the intersection between my ceramic and painting practice: how can I induce a bodily and tactile response to my paintings, in the same way I encourage touch in my ceramic sculptures?
